Volkswagen isn't new to station wagons by any means, but its new Golf Alltrack is the first designed specifically to go after the station-wagon-based, outdoorsy crossover segment that has been owned largely by Subaru - specifically its Outback - model for years, and to a lesser extent, Volvo and Audi. Motor Trend recently put the Alltrack through its paces and found it to be capable competitor.

One of the more notable attribute of the Alltrack is standard all-wheel drive, which has until now been one of Subaru's unique differentiators. And out on trails, Motor Trend found the Alltrack to be sure-footed and nimble, whether scrambling over loose rocks or up steep, rut-filled hills. Under the hood, the Alltrack features a 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbo motor that makes 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque.
